The Pioneer hockey team held its annual banquet last Friday night at the Cable Center. DU finished the season 21-15-4 overall and 13-11-4 in the WCHA conference and missed the WCHA Frozen Four and NCAA tournament for the second straight season. Below are a list of the awards handed out on Friday night:

Bill Masterton Memorial Award (MVP): Senior goaltender Glenn Fisher (Edmonton, Alberta) captured the award after leading the team with a 13-9-2 record in net and a career best 2.32 goals against average and .919 save percentage.

Leading scorer award and “Star of the Year”: Redshirt freshman Brock Trotter (Brandon, Manitoba) was the first freshman to lead the team in scoring since Dave Shields did it in 1986-87. Trotter scored 16 goals and dished out 24 assists for 40 points.

Barry Sharp Memorial Award (top freshman): Tyler Ruegsegger (Lakewood, Colo.) led the team with a plus 15 plus/minus rating, while netting 19 assists and 15 goals for 34 points on the season.

Dr. Art Mason Award (top scholar-athlete): Ruegsegger and senior Danny King (Colorado Springs, Colo.) King posted a 3.91 grade-point average during the season while majoring in finance and marketing. Ruegsegger put together a 3.96 GPA in general business.

Dr. Ken Bredesen Award (sportsmanship): J.D. Corbin (Littleton, Colo.) spent just four minutes in the penalty box this season in 10 games. Corbin missed 30 games this season after breaking his leg.

Bob Martin Memorial Award (community service): Corbin and freshman Brandon Vossberg (St. Paul, Minn.) visited local children’s hospitals, elementary schools and volunteered in the Qwest Food Drive.

Murray Armstrong Award (most-improved): Sophomore J.P. Testuwide (Vail, Colo.) dished out three assists and led the team with 63 penalty minutes.

Keith Magnuson Award (top defensive player): Sophomore Chris Butler (St. Louis, Mo.) earned honorable mention All-American honors for scoring 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points this season.

Dr. Ralph Verploeg Award (most inspirational): Adrian Veideman (Sicamous, British Columbia) scored 13 points on three goals and 10 assists.

Also 10 Pioneers received All-WCHA academic honorees for having a 3.0 GPA or better this season.
