The self-titled debut album by Team Sleep has finally arrived. Many fans will know Team Sleep from the band’s underground work and single from the Matrix: Reloaded soundtrack. Their debut album offers much of the similar, soft electronica, found on the Matrix: Reloaded soundtrack. One of the more popular songs, found on the album, “Ever (Foreign Flag)” is a catchy tune. Unfortunately, the song doesn’t seem to hold much ground in comparison to the mainstream industrial and electronica leaders. However, the album is worth giving a shot. The first song of the album, “Ataraxia,” is probably one of the more uplifting tunes on the entire CD, but Team Sleep manages to pull off a steady flow of songs without a large selection of hard riffs. Team Sleep is the side project of the Deftones. Although Team Sleep may gain some popularity because of its relevance to the Deftones, there are some significant differences between the two bands. “King Diamond” and “11/11” exemplify the band in its softest, yet most artistic form. Although both songs and nearly every other song on the album have hints of the Deftones within, the styles of each song tend to follow a standard pattern of crescendo and simple rhythms. This tends to bring the band down at times as compared to mainstream electronica, but fans of Team Sleep’s other material will be pleased. The 15-track CD is definitely a nice alternative to some of the more modern industrial artists and new fans may become a little more interested in the underground area of the genre. For merely creating a single album, Team Sleep has leaped over many newer bands struggling to survive in the world of industrial rock and electronica. Any fans of both techno and soft rock should definitely look into Team Sleep.
