Peace in the Middle East lecture

The Institute for the Study of Israel in the Middle East (ISIME) is hosting a lecture by Raed Mualem, an Arab-Israeli and ISIME Partner for Peace, tonight. Mualem is a pioneer in the development of the ISIME International Conference for University Leaders throughout the Middle East.

Mualem’s lecture, “Why There is Hope for Peace,” is being held in Sturm Hall Auditorium at 7 p.m. It is open to the community.

Examining biofuels

The BA Program in International Studies is hosting “If Biofuels are the Answer – What is the Question?” tomorrow from 5-6 p.m. Professor Stephanie Schlegel will lead the lecture, which will focus on a review of the benefits and consequences of biofuels from an environmental, development and climate perspective.

The lecture is being held in Ben Cherrington Hall, room 301.

Globalization and

migration

Saskia Sassen, a sociology professor from Columbia University, will be speaking at a public lecture tomorrow. The lecture, “Immigration in a Global World,” will focus on ways in which globalization has altered migration.

Sassen is also a member of the Committee on Global Thought, has worked on a project for UNESCO and is an author. She is giving this lecture as part of the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program.

The lecture is from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Lindsay Auditorium in Sturm Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Photography exhibit

The “On the Road: Photography of the Soviet Empire” exhibition is opening this Thursday in the Myhren Gallery in Shwayder Art Building.

The exhibit is based on eighty years Soviet photographers spent documenting the ethnic, religious and physical diversity of the USSR, a government ordered task. Photographers were to document and glorify everyday life throughout the Soviet Union.

Curators Dan Jacobs and David Shneer chose six Soviet photographers’ work to display. The opening reception is from 5-8 p.m.

Women’s conference

The 13th annual DU Women’s Conference is being held this Friday in the Chambers Center. The theme is “Changing Perceptions: The Many Faces of Feminism.” The conference is being held from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Malcolm Gladwell on spaghetti

The first Friday of the month, DU will be hosting TED talks. This Friday is “Technology, Entertainment, Design Event: Malcolm Gladwell on Spaghetti Sauce.” Gladwell is the author of the books Blink and Tipping Point and is currently a staff writer for The New Yorker Magazine.

The talks are hosted by the Graduate School of International Studies. They will be broadcast followed by a group discussion. All talks begin at noon in the Cyber Cafe in Ben Cherrington Hall.

Sexual assault

awareness week

Sexual Assault Awareness Week is taking place from April 7-11. The theme of the event is sex, media and power and will examine how the media, power and the construction of sex in society can influence and create for sexual violence. Programs will be held throughout the week.
