Senior James Love became the second Denver golfer since 1999 to qualify for the NCAA national championships, which will be held in two weeks. Love joins Tony Giarratano who qualified back in 2003.

He qualified while the Pioneers competed in the NCAA west regional this past weekend in Tuscon, Ariz. This was the fourth consecutive year that DU had qualified and made an appearance at the NCAA west regionals.

The tournament was held at the Omni Tuscon National Golf Course and the Pioneers went in seeded 16 out of 27 teams.

Unfortunately the seeding did not hold to form as Denver finished in a tie for 22nd place with the University of Louisville. DU shot a three-round score of 16-over par 880, behind Arizona and Florida who tied for first with a 37-under par score.

The top 10 teams and two individuals not on qualifying teams have advanced to the nationals held in Oregon in two weeks.

Love shot a 4-under par, 68 on Saturday to finish with a 54-hole score of 8-under par, 208. Love finished just five strokes back of a two-way tie for first place between a Florida and Nevada player.

This is the end of the season for the Pioneers as a team, which will return three of the five players that played on Saturday for next season. Love’s season will continue as he will play in the National’s on May 31 to June 3.
