Senior defenseman Patrick Mullen was suspended from tonight’s hockey game against in-state rival Colorado College for a slashing incident during last Saturday’s loss to Minnesota-Duluth.
Mullen was assessed a five-minute major penalty for slashing, as well as a 10-minute game misconduct penalty at the 20:00 mark of the third period of a game DU lost 4-2.
Along with his suspension, Mullen has met with Ron Grahame, senior associate director of athletics, and head coach George Gwozdecky to explain his conduct and discuss the seriousness of the circumstances.
“A hockey player is responsible for his stick,” Gwozdecky said. “Patrick’s reckless action with his stick at the end of the Duluth game warrants a one-game suspension.”
Mullen is also required to meet with WCHA Commissioner Bruce McLeod to discuss the incident.
Mullen is ranked No. 2 among Pioneer defensemen in scoring with 19 points on two goals and 17 assists. Mullen scored two of the 17 assists during Denver’s last game against CC in Colorado Springs.
Tonight’s game will take place in the World Arena in Colorado Springs. The puck drops at 7:37 p.m.
