The hockey team scored three goals in the third period to overcome a 4-2 deficit to defeat the No. 14 ranked Vermont Catamounts on Friday night at Magness Arena.
The Pioneers took their first and only lead when sophomore Joe Colbourne scored with two minutes remaining.
The goal was Colborne’s second, his first came during a power play earlier in the period. Sophomore Patrick Wiercioch added a power play goal in the third to help the Pioneers come from behind. Wiercioch also contributed an assist.
Freshman Matt Donovan had his first career goal, while captain Rhett Rakhshani added two assists.
On Saturday night the Pioneers weren’t so fortunate as the Catamounts retaliated scoring six times. At the end of the first period, the Pioneers were tied 2-2 led by senior Tyler Ruegsegger, who tallied both goals.
Colin Vock scored for the Catamounts in the second period to extend the lead 3-2. The Pioneers responded shortly after, but allowed the Catamounts to strike three more times and pull away with a 6-4 road victory.
Women’s Soccer

DU 4, SOUTH ALABAMA 0
The Pioneers got two wins over conference opponents last weekend.
On Friday night they ousted Troy on Mariah Johnston’s lone goal, which was scored only 21 seconds into play. The Pioneers out shot the Trojans 17-3 during the game and dominated the time of possession. Freshman goalkeeper Lara Campbell only needed to make one save for the victory. On Sunday afternoon Campbell recorded her third straight shutout as the Pioneers rolled over South Alabama 4-0. With the win, DU advanced to 10-4-1 (5-1 SBC) for the season.
Men’s Soccer
DU 1, MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY 2
The Pioneers were beat 2-1 on Saturday night at the DU Soccer Stadium despite freshman Alex Tarnoczi scoring his sixth goal of the season. Senior Collin Audley found Tarnoczi who scored the games first goal. Audley failed to convert on a penalty kick in the match when the Roo’s goalie Joe Cooper made a diving save. Denver failed to hold onto the early lead as they allowed the Roo’s to tie the game in the 43rd minute.
In the final minutes John Bayron Sosa’s shot hit the post, but his teammate David Sarabia was there to put the rebound shot past a diving Willis. The rebound goal proved to be the game winner as the Pioneers failed to tie the game in the last minutes.
Now they hit the road where they begin conference play next weekend against San Jose State on Friday at 8 p.m. Denver continues on the road against Sacramento State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
