Leadership discussion
As part of the Daniels College of Business Voices of Experience program, Robert Vanourek, a strategic turnaround specialist, will be speaking on the topic of searching for great leadership this afternoon from 4-6 p.m.
Vanourek is the CEO of Sensormatic and has led successful turnarounds in a number of companies. He will speak about his experience searching for exceptional leadership.
The discussion is free and open to all members of the public. It will be held in The Marcus Commons at the Daniels College of Business.
Study abroad ice cream social
The International House and the DU Involvement Team are hosting an ice cream social tonight from 8-10 p.m. in Centennial Towers.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the study abroad program, hear stories from returning study abroad students and get help completing study abroad applications. The event is free.
Panel discusses living with less
A panel discussion is taking place this Thursday on the topic of “Living Better with Less.” The panel will answer questions about the role of fasting and self-denial in today’s society, and what spiritual, psychological and physiological benefits there are to saying “no” to the contemporary belief that more is not enough.
Members of the panel include Religious Studies Professor Liyakat Takim, Philosophy Professor Sarah Pessin and Dr. Michael Maley from the Health and Counseling Center. Musical at Lamont
The DU Department of Theatre and the Lamont School of Music are presenting the premiere of “The Talking Bird,” a musical-comedy, on Thursday. The fun will last from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Erickson Byron Flexible Theatre in the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children over two and free for military personnel with valid ID.
Marking Martin Luther King Jr. legacy
A series of events celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King continue this week. From noon to 1 p.m. today, the Women’s College is hosting a talk titled “Social Justice Speaks.” The event will take place in room 150 of the college. Author Hermon Malone will be speaking at DU on Wednesday in the Sturm College of Law Forum from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. On Thursday, “Red Power: Native American Activism and the Civil Rights Movement” will take place in the Ritchie Center Multipurpose Room from 4:30-6 p.m.
An open mic night kicks off the final week of celebrations. “Open Mic Night – Poetry for Social Justice” will begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29 in Sidelines Pub at the Driscoll Student Center. The final event will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 30. Former African American KKK member, Daryl Davis, will speak at 7 p.m. in Davis Auditorium.

Winter Carnival
The annual Winter Carnival kicks off this Sunday, Jan. 27 with the ninth annual Polar Bear Run, a 5K charity run, at Washington Park. On Monday, Jan. 28, an afternoon barbecue will be taking place on Driscoll Lawn. A number of activities will be taking place including an ice sculpture demonstration and music provided by KVDU.
The carnival continues on Tuesday, Jan. 29, with a Figure Skating club show in Joy Burns Arena, followed by a free skate with the club. On Wednesday, Jan. 30, a broomball tournament is being held in Joy Burns Arena. The last on-campus event of this DU tradition is the basketball double header on Thursday, Jan. 31.
The carnival heads to the mountains at Steamboat Springs on Feb. 1. The on-mountain weekend lasts until Feb. 3 and includes ice skating, a visit to the hot springs and a welcome dinner among other events.
Israel and Middle East discussions
The Institute for the Study of Israel in the Middle East (ISIME) is hosting a number of speakers throughout winter quarter.
On Friday, Feb. 1, Menachem Klein from Israel will be speaking at noon in the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS), room 201. Another lunch lecture will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 5. Mohamad Yahya from Sudan will be speaking at noon in room 201 of the GSIS.
On Sunday, Feb. 10, Larry Weinberg from Israel21c will be giving a community lecture. The talk begins at 7 p.m. in Sturm Hall auditorium.
Toward the end of the quarter, Dr. Herzl Melmed, an ISIME associate will be speaking. His talk will be on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in room 201 of the GSIS.
The last discussion of the quarter is on Tuesday, March 4. The guest speaker will be Dr. Raed Mualem from Galilee, Israel. The talk is being held at 7 p.m. in GSIS, room 201.
