The DU women’s golf team won their third straight tournament to start off the fall season at CU’s Heather Fall Memorial Invitational last Tuesday in Broomfield, CO.

The Pioneers Shot a 54-hole total of 18-over par 900 to hold off the University of Idaho by four shots.

“I think we played very well this week,” said Head Coach Sammie Chergo. “The conditions were very difficult, but we competed as a team very well.”

Leading the way for the Pioneers was senior Emily Hoeper and freshman Stephanie Sherlock who finished second and third, respectively.

Hoeper shot the low round of the tournament, with a second round 69, on her way to finishing the tournament at 3-over par 219, five shots out of first place and one shot a head of Sherlock.

During the Pioneers’ winning streak, Sherlock has finished in the top three in every tournament, earning the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Month award.

“Stephanie came in here ready to play,” said Chergo. “She has had a lot of national experience in her junior career. We all really look forward to good things form her.”

Rounding out the lineup for the Pioneers were sophomores Dawn Shockley, Jessica Yam and Katie Kempter, who all finished the tournament inside the top 35.

With the record breaking win the Pioneers have moved up to No. 4 in the weekly Golfstat national rankings, only behind the University of Georgia, Duke University, and UCLA.

The Pioneers also have two players ranked inside the top 50 individually, with Sherlock coming ina t No. 24 and Hoeper at No. 41.

“This is as talented a team as I have ever had,” Chergo said. “We are very committed to eachother and everyone really just enjoys the game.”

Chergo and her Pioneers are in action again Oct. 16 when they go to Chula Vista, Calif. to compete in the Lady Aztec Fall Clasic.
