The Office of Multicultural Affairs has become the Center for Multicultural Excellence.

JesCB:s Trevino, the Associate Provost for Multicultural Affairs, who started at DU this September, wanted the center to have a name that better reflected the importance and value of diversity.

Trevino worked with the Multicultural Initiatives Advisory Council and the Office of the Provost to change the name of the center.

“One of my core beliefs as an educator and administrator in higher education is that diversity is an asset and essential to a quality educational experience,” said Trevino.

The center also has a new slogan to go along with the new name. “Promoting Excellence through Diversity and Positive Intergroup Relations” will adorn banners and advertisements for the center.

Trevino said that it is not only the center’s name and slogan that has changed, but its philosophy and foundation. He said that it will change the way the University of Denver thinks about diversity.

“A central piece of this will be campus-wide education about the direct relationship between diversity and academic excellence,” Trevino said.

The new center will focus on inter-group relations, as well as supporting DU’s communities of color and minority groups. The center will also work to educate the campus about issues relating to diversity.

“One important thrust will be providing essential education concerning the needs and experiences of many traditionally disempowered populations on campus,” said Trevino, “including Latinos, Asian Americans, Native Americans, African Americans, GLBT, women, people with disabilities, and other salient social identities found at DU.”

In the coming months, the center will be holding all-campus activities, educating students on diversity, and helping everyone on campus to understand their mission.
