“In Limbo” is a new exhibit of contemporary art showing at the Victoria H. Myhren Gallery in the Shwayder Art Building at the University of Denver.
This exhibit deals with the “tension of uncertainty.”
The works speak about the inner feeling of the subject in contrast to its physical appearance.
The content of these works revolves around one’s inner self and emotions and the tangible outer world.
Last spring, a group of 15 DU students formed the Marsico Curatorial Practicum, which curated and organized this exhibition of international contemporary artists from Denver Art Museum’s Logan Collection and the private collection of Vicki and Kent Logan.
Gwen Chanzit, curator and professor at DU, led the practicum.
This exhibition is sponsored by Vicki and Kent Logan, Vicki and Trygve Myhren, the Denver Art Museum and the Marsico Initiative.
Jack Pierson’s photographic collages “Seven Shades of Suicide Blonde” are in seven separate frames and play with the effects of positive and negative space.
“Imagine You Are Driving 3” by Julian Opie is vinyl stretched on an aluminum frame.
The color in this is flat and it is reminiscent of a computer or video game.
Cindy Sherman, who is well known for her feminist perspectives in photography, has two film stills in this exhibit.
She puts herself in the scenes of her work, portraying different women.
Other artists include Richard Phillips, Mona Hatoum, Su-en Wong, Ron Mueck, Gottfried Helwein, Bo Bartlett, Rut Blees Luxemburg and Sean Mellyn.
Most of these works are portraits and are realistic to the point of hyper realism. The physical realism contrasts with the inner fantasies of the artist or the subject being portrayed.
