The DU men’s and women’s tennis teams completed a perfect weekend of competition with victories over Iowa and Nebraska for the men and a win at Colorado for the women.

The No. 41 women’s squad improved to an impressive 6-0 record for the season with a nail-biting 4-3 triumph at Colorado.

The Pioneers started off the match losing two of their three doubles matches, with the duo of sophomore’s Julia Bauregger and Ute Schnoy winning 8-4.

On the singles side of things, junior Mallory Voelker paced the Pioneers with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Schnoy, junior Annette Aksdal and Bauregger were also victors in their matches.

DU will host Arkansas State this Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Pinehurst Country Club.

On the men’s side, No. 66 DU defeated No. 72 Iowa 5-2 and the same score was good for an upset win over No. 61 Nebraska, with both matches played in Lincoln, Neb.

On Friday against Iowa, No. 6 ranked doubles pair Adam Holmstrom and Niklas Persson played together for the first time this spring season and won their match 8-5. Senior Kalle Rosen and freshmen David Simson won in exciting fashion, 9-7.

Holmstrom continued his success in singles play with a 7-5, 7-6 victory while Persson, Rosen and junior Benny Althaus also won. Althaus played for the first time this season after missing the first four matches.

On Saturday, Denver had similar results against Nebraska. Holmstrom and Persson paced the way in doubles play with an 8-5 win as Althaus, and freshmen Andrew Landwerlen won their match 8-5.

Holmstrom, Persson, Althaus and Rosen all won singles matches to help the Pioneers to a second straight win.

“We played well this weekend, especially doubles. We must continue to get better if we want to reach our goals this season,” said Head Coach Danny Westerman.

Denver is now 5-1 for the season and will travel to Albuquerque, N.M. this weekend to take on No. 55 New Mexico and Northern Arizona.
