Having never seen the Blue Man Group, I must admit I had no idea what to expect when I walked into the Pepsi Center last Saturday.

I knew that the show featured men in blue paint, but that was about the extent of my knowledge on the group.

However, somewhere between the large assembly of pipes being used as drums and the strange videos on the oversized screens above the stage, I found myself mesmerized by the odd yet extremely entertaining and innovative show.

The show opened with a mock infomercial announcing a product named after the group’s tour (or perhaps vice versa) called How to be a Megastar 2.0.

This video provided advice to the group on how to make it as a rock star, and continued on and off throughout the show.

The men would try to follow this advice, breaking into musical numbers in response to the advice they were seeing.

The men did not talk throughout the show, but instead used percussion and dance moves, as well as gestures and audience participation, to communicate.

Somehow, however, they still managed to be very humorous, at times channeling the three stooges in the way they related to each other.

Even the video streaming throughout the show provided humor by mocking modern rock bands with its satirical advice.

They also had a full back up band and singer, as well as a booming voice speaking the words on the large screens.

Most of all, however, their percussion, using obscure items like pipes instead of traditional drums, helped them communicate to the audience.

Their music was both innovative and entertaining.

Bald blue men making music out of random objects would have been enough to make the show a hit.

However, their use of technology really took the show to another level. The aforementioned video screens played music videos correlating to the songs they were playing.

The lights surrounding the stage set the mood, whether they were a solid white light or flashes of color.

There was even a song in which a woman accompanied the group. She wore a dress made up of flashing beams of rainbow light, which was very effective.

The show became not only a work of musical ingenuity, but an exhibit of innovative technology as well.

Whether a fan of percussion or comedy, of satire or performance art, there is something for everyone in the Blue Man Group’s funny and inventive performance.

Their How to be a Megastar Tour 2.0 is traveling all over the country through the middle of next year, and truly should not be missed.
