Latina sorority meeting

The Pi Lambda Chi Latina Sorority Inc. is hosting an interest meeting.

Free refreshments will be provided, and students who are interested in the sorority or want any additional information are encouraged to attend.

The meeting will be held tonight from 6 – 7 p.m. in the Driscoll Gallery.

Quit smoking class

The Health and Counseling Center and Porter Hospital are sponsoring a free “Getting Ready to Quit Smoking””class.

Populism lecture

Dr. Harry Boyte from the University of Minnesota will be conducting a lecture called “Populism and John Dewey: Convergences and Contradictions.”

The lecture will be held tomorrow from 12 – 2 p.m. in the Craig Hall Community Room.

Cabaret

The opening night of the musical “Cabaret,” will be shown on Thursday from 8 – 10 p.m.

The musical will be presented by the Lamont Opera Theater Program and the DU Theater Department.

The event will be held at the Byron Flex Theatre in the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. Prices range from $25 to $20 with an additional $10 off for DU students.

Film and culture series

The International House is providing an evening of film, food and culture. A foreign-made film will be shown, and free snacks from that country will be provided.

A cultural discussion about the film will follow.

The Film and Culture Series is open to anyone who is interested in foreign film.

Penrose workshops

Penrose Library is offering a series of workshops on using library and Web resources.

Workshops take place in the Penrose Library computer training room and are open to any interested faculty, staff or students.

The following are the workshops offered in January: “Cite that Site” will be held this Friday from 12 – 1 p.m.

“Using Google Scholar” will be held Thursday, Jan. 25, from 12 – 1 p.m. “What Happened to Gold Rush?” will be held Friday, Jan. 26, from 12 – 1 p.m.

“The Wonders of Academic Search Premier” will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 6 – 7 p.m.

Ice cream social

The International House is providing a study abroad ice cream social for students who are interested in studying abroad next school year.

Free ice cream will be provided. The event will be held in the Towers Lounge next Tuesday from 8 p.m. – 10 p.m.

Guest speaker

The Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences program is hosting guest speaker David Horowitz, author of the recent book, “The Professors: The 101 Most Dangerous Academics in America.”

Horowitz has spoken on various Fox News Network shows including Hannity and Colmes.

His speech, titled “The Liberal Corruption of Higher Education: Reflections of a Dangerous Professor” will be held next Tuesday at Sturm Hall 451 from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. Contact Elise Kordis at ekordis@du.edu for further information.

Study abroad fair

The winter quarter study abroad fair will be held next Wednesday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the Driscoll Bridge.

Program providers from around the world will be gathered to share information about the study abroad and service learning opportunities.

Guest ambassador

The Center for China-United States Cooperation at DU is presenting the “Jackson/Ho China- East Asia Forum.”

This event will feature Ambassador James R. Lilley, one of the most knowledgeable US experts on Chinese and East Asian foreign relations who served in the CIA as an operations officer in various Asian locations.

Ambassador Lilley will present the lecture, “China and the U.S.: Contention and Cooperation on Korea and Taiwan.”

A reception and dinner before the lecture will be held next Thursday from 6 – 7:30 p.m. in the Renaissance Room South of the Mary Reed Building. The cost for the reception and dinner is $25 for DU students, faculty and staff.

Volunteer experience

South High School Newcomer Center is inviting DU students to spend one hour a week working with one or two African refugees to help them with their English skills.
