A flasher interrupted the Mr. DU competition last Wednesday evening during a show featuring several memorable acts by the 19 participants, who did everything from lap dances to juggling fire.
Halfway through the show, when a contestant was on stage, a corner of the back curtain lifted and a male exposed himself in front of an audience of close to 300.
He stood for a brief moment stark naked, then dropped the curtain. After a moment of shocked silence the audience burst into laughter.
The Mr. DU contest brought out 19 males students to compete in three different categories, boxers/pajamas, costume, and talent. The event was held in Sturm Auditorium.
The winner of the title Mr. DU was Max Goldberg. His costume consisted of him dressing in high heels and woman’s clothing and his talent was a humorous skit to music. Mostly he flirted a great deal with the judges.
The evening started with a parade of men dressed in everything from boxers to less than that.
Daniel Goldware and David Leech shocked many in the audience when they came out together with one of them in underwear with a wig underneath and the other with the section cut out of his Jockeys that was supposed to cover the buttocks.
“I was completely taken back at first, ” said sophomore Janna Kaufman, “but after that you could not help but laugh.”
Cooper Scwartz was the runner-up and Seth Pfaltzgraff and Jason Perman tied for 3rd place. The co-masters of ceremonies for the night were Farah Poc and last year’s Mr. DU Collin Tilbe.
The other contestants were: Collin Krum Brett Crawford, Zach Bignell, Mark Ballageer, Drew Doyle, Goldware, Paul Gubany, J. Christan Rawson, Dave Busch, Basil Shah, Brian Kates, Shylar Sanders, Leech, John Conyers and R. Alex Canon.
Krum wore a full gorilla suit while Alex Canon, who was decked out as the Chiquita banana woman, followed him during the costume contest. Others contestants were dressed as the Incredible Hulk, Tarzan, Superman, a chicken and a cow.
Paul Gubany and John Conyers did a juggling duet with knifes and then they repeated the feat with fire torches.
About $2,000 was raised from contest entry fees, for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation for Juvenile Diabetes, according to Poc.
Audience members also received the chance to win a free spring break trip for next year through Xtreme Tours.
Raffle tickets were given to everyone as people entered the auditorium and prizes were distributed in-between each competition.
Sophomore Jamie Kloster said her most memorable moments was, “Brian (Kates) and his singing of the gummy bear song and the two guys (Leech and Goldware) who they couldn’t keep under control. But I expected it to be wild and crazy based on the guys I knew that were involved.”
There was also a special performance in the end by the DU Dance Collective.
