Women’s lacrosse: DU is coming off their most successful season in school history with a record of 15-5 overall and 4-1 in conference. Friday’s 19-6 loss to No. 2 ranked Duke was definately not the way newcomer coach Liza Kelly wanted things to start out.
Kelly comes to DU after serving five-season’s as Head Coach at the University of Boston.
The Pioneers started the season ranked No. 19 by Lacrosse Magazine. The Blue Devils started the game Friday night with a 4-0 lead just 10 minutes into the contest.
DU jumped on the board as Megan Carver found the back of the net, after having to miss all of least season with an injury.
That was about the only bright spot in the first-half for Denver who saw themsleves get outscored 8-1 to end the period and trail 12-2 at intermission.
Sophomore Karen Morton opened the second half with a goal and was followed minutes later by a freshman Ali Flury goal.
To make things worse, Duke player and Cherry Creek High native Carolina Cryer set a school-record with seven goals.
The Pioneers will next be in action this Saturday when they travel to take on Columbia at 11 a.m. MT.
Women’s tennis: The weekend started off well for the DU tennis team and ended on a downward spiral.
After the No. 46 ladies lost a close 4-3 match last week to No. 48 Oregon, they responded with a 5-2 victory over No. 72 Louisville on Friday in Minneapolis, Minn..
Sophomore Annette Aksdal, freshman Ute Schnoy, freshman Julia Bauregger, sophomore Kyle Iwinski and sophomore Lorinda Boothman all won their single matches for Denver.
Aksdal led the way with an easy 6-4, 6-2 victory and Schnoy followed with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph.
The Pioneers lost the No. 1 and 2 doubles but seniors Marisa Mechem and Rachel Sackmaster came through with a win by default at the No. 3.
The Pioneers continued their trip in Minnesota with a tough 6-1 defeat to the unranked Gophers. DU also dropped to 5-3 on the season.
Schnoy won Denver’s only singles match with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Bauregger and Iwinski won the Pioneer’s only double’s match after a Minneosta player went down with an injury.
The road for DU will not get any easier as they travel to take on No. 3 Georgia Tech this weekend.
Men’s tennis: The No. 58 ranked Pioneers had no problem during a 7-0 victroy at in-state foe Air Force on Saturday. DU improved to 5-1 on the young season.
They were led by junior and No. 21 nationally ranked Adam Holmstrom who won his single match 7-5, 6-2 and his doubles match with junior Niklas Persson 8-5.
Senior’s Nejc Smole and Timo Kienle both won their singles matches along with juniors Persson and Kalle Rosen winning their respective draws.
Freshman Ravjot Dhatt and Smole were the lone Pioneers to suffer a defeat on the day, as they lost their doubles match.
DU has already defeated Texas Tech, Montana State and New Mexico among others this season. They will next be in action this Friday when they travel to take on BYU at 11 a.m. and Utah on Saturday at 1.
