Cosmetics talk
Stacy Malkan, award-winning author of the book Not Just a Pretty Face, will speak at DU on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. about the link between cosmetics and breast cancer and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. Contact Susan Roll for more information.
Film screening
“Laramie Inside Out,” a film by Beverly Seckinger, will be shown on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Lindsey Auditorium in Sturm Hall.
The film, presented by the Department of Mass Communications and Journalism Studies and the Center for Multicultural Excellence, explores personal discovery and the meaning of community.
Following the film there will be a panel discussion with Seckinger, which will explore the gains and losses, cultural trends in GLBTQ rights today, 10 years after the murder of Matthew Shepherd whose story is told in the film.
The event is free and open to the DU community.
Leadership
conference
The Student Leadership Training Conference will be held on Friday in Lindsey Auditorium in Sturm Hall from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The conference, which is open to all students, offers an opportunity for participants to develop and enhance leadership skills and meet other student leaders.
Politics of food film, workshop
The concept of “food as a political weapon’ will be examined at two events this weekend.
On Friday, there will be a screening of “Harvest of Sorrow,” an award-winning documentary on the Ukrainian famine of 1932-33, in the Cyber Café at 6 p.m. A roundtable discussion by experts on the famine will follow.
On Saturday, there is an all-day workshop in Olin Hall starting at 9 a.m. It focuses on famines, from the Irish potato blight through famines during the 20th century, including the
Ukrainian famine and the famine in Ethiopia in 1985. The event culminates with a discussion on the famine in Darfur. Historians from Canada and United States will speak.

Film distribution lecture
The Department of Mass Communications and Journalism Studies will present a workshop featuring award-winning filmmaker Beverly Seckinger on Friday at 10 a.m. in the Mass Communications building.
Seckinger will discuss the current and evolving strategies in self-distribution of documentary films.
The workshop is free and lunch will be provided. Space is limited, though, so students interested in attending must RSVP to Chris Henning at chennin2@du.edu by tomorrow in order to attend.
Charity volleyball tournament
This Saturday the Delta Zeta sorority will host a charity volleyball tournament in Washington Park. The tournament will begin at 12 p.m. and will include free pizza, music and a drawing for prizes such as movie passes and $75 in free gas.
All DU students and faculty are welcome to organize teams and compete.
Team registration costs $75 and must be done no later than Thursday.

Ballot Issue on civil rights
Dr. Hava Gordon of the Sociology Department will give a luncheon lecture on the civil rights Initiative which will be on the ballot in November and will end the practice of affirmative action in Colorado.
The lecture will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15 in Nagel Hall’s Overflow Dining Room.
