Alex Gallegos’ editorial last week regarding the fundamental flaw of DU’s alcohol policyB is dead on.B

Alcohol use is part of college life and administrators need to accept that fact if they wish to address the problems associated with it.

This also holds true for the next most popular drug amongst college students: marijuana.

Like alcohol, marijuana is an intoxicant and something students use to relax or party.

Yet unlike alcohol, marijuana has never led to an overdose death, and it does not contribute to problems on campus like fighting, date rape and property damage.B

If students getting drunk are a problem, perhaps allowing them a safer form of intoxication is the solution.

There is no rational reason why administrators should prefer students use alcohol instead of marijuana, and they certainly should not be punishing anyone for making a safer choice.

It’s time colleges to stop encouraging students to “drink responsibly” and start encouraging them to “party responsibly.”B

Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation is dedicated to educating the public about marijuana.
