“Ask your DU Docs” will be a column in which students can ask the DU Health Center doctors questions. This week’s column features frequently asked questions. To ask a question, go to www.duclarion.com and click “letter to the editor.”
Dear Docs,
I am worried about my roommate. I notice that whenever we go to eat, she just picks at her food. She seems really worried about her weight, even though she appears extremely thin to me. Does she have some sort of problem? How can I help her?
Nervous in Nelson
Dear Nervous:
Your roommate may have some problems with her body image, perhaps even an eating disorder. First, even though you are worried about her, just be her friend and not her therapist. Let her know in an honest and nonjudgmental way that you care about her, that you are concerned about her eating and that there are some resources on campus for students who have similar issues. The Counseling Center is located on the 3rd floor of the Ritchie Center with walk-in hours Monday – Friday from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., no appointment needed. The first few visits are free, and following sessions are offered on a low cost basis. Our Web site is located at: www.du.edu/counseling.
We offer individual counseling and can also help locate groups available around campus. National Eating Disorder Awareness Week is Feb 22 through the 29, so, also look for activities then.
Sincerely,The Docs
