Take Beck, the Dandy Warhols, the New York Dolls and a little touch of the Beatles and you have the new Australian band, the Sleepy Jackson.

Named after a former narcoleptic drummer, the Sleepy Jackson has debuted with its new CD Lovers, and will stop in Denver, on April 23 at the Bluebird Theater as part of its American tour.

The band consists of front man Luke Steele and that’s pretty much it. Son of blues singer Rick Steele, Luke has a supporting band, but as the cover to Lovers illustrates, the band’s credit goes mostly to Luke.

The cover shows Luke by himself, wearing some freaky eye makeup and holding what appears to be a bichon frise. His striped shirt and hair helmet don’t really help his physical appeal all that much, but I guess Luke likes it.

Why anyone would use such a picture of himself on the cover of the CD is beyond me.

The band’s music is a mix between indie rock, old punk, psychedelic and a little pinch of country. But don’t let that country pinch scare you away. It is still considered indie rock.

The album begins with Steele showing his ability to hit high notes. But by the third track, “Rain Falls for Wind,” he reminds us that he is in fact male and does have a low voice.

The majority of the album is calming, low-key and melancholic. However, there are some twists that catch you off guard. For example, on track six, Steele performs a harsh, cold and almost freaky spoken word.

He has no emotion and actually ends it with coughing.

The whole thing was a little misplaced, but definitely showed just how trippy and quirky the album is.

Currently, The Sleepy Jackson is trying to get attention around the world, mostly in the U.S.

They have hit it big in Australia, but they are looking for more fans.

Steele told MTV, “We’ve been to London, the U.K., but it’s not the same. Not a lot of people [in the U.S.] have heard of the band. I think we’re picking up fans each day.”
