The University of Denver lacrosse team heads into its last two games hoping to continue its winning streak and make a run for the playoffs.

The Pioneers brought down No. 14 Ohio State two weekends ago for their fourth straight victory, and hope for similar success as they face Virginia, another top ranked team, today. If the team continues to be victorious, they may make the playoffs that start May 10.

“We have a lot of young guys, but the last four weeks we have really turned the corner on how to play and how to win,” said Coach Jamie Munro.

Right now the team is taking it one game at a time.

The final three regular season games will determine whether DU goes into a three-way-tie for the league championship, in which case the champion will be determined by the number of goals allowed against the team during regular season conference play.

Munro attributes much of the team’s success to “the combination of great attitude and great athletes up and down.”

He said, “This two weekends ago against Ohio State we had three of our defensemen out, and the freshmen and sophomores really stepped up.”

Munro said the team’s goalkeeper, senior Jeff Nunziato, has really contributed to the success of the team.

“He has stepped up and played great. He makes the big saves when we need them.”

Sophomore Scott Davidson and sophomore Matt Brown lead the team in goals, while senior Mike Kenlay leads the team in assists, playing midfield or attack.

However, Munro feels the wins have all been because of team efforts.

“We don’t have anybody scoring at break-neck speed, but we have lots of guys scoring,” he said.

The team will head into their last three games with a 7-4 overall record, and a 2-1 in the Great Western Lacrosse League.
