Blasting bombs, machine gun fire, screams of fear, laughter, music and applause were sounds that filled Sturm Auditorium Wednesday night. Students under the direction of Sheila Schroder, assistant professor in the Department of Mass Communications and Journalism Studies, were able to showcase their work in front of their peers.

Students who were enrolled in documentary theory, film production, editing and experimental film presented their final projects in front of a half-filled auditorium. Flyers were placed around campus promoting the event and students were enticed to come for free pizza and soda.

The night’s program included 13 documentaries and five subvertisements. The documentaries ranged from five to eight minutes in length.

Topics ranged included the niche of vinyl records a world of CDs and mp3s, observations of how people interact together in our society, and eye stimulating visuals. All presentations were creative, professional and informative.

Following the documentaries were several short films called subvertisements. Tiffany Haberkorn, a film production major, explained that a subvertisement is a short film that contains a subliminal message. The subvertisements were fun and creative, even though the subliminal messages were not always clear, as they were only about 30 seconds long.

To end the night, eight more documentaries were showed. Two of these documentaries braved the subject of the war Iraq. Tiffany Haberkorn chose to produce her documentary about the ways in which technology has progressed, but people, have regressed to violence and war with the invention of new technology.

Her film showed graphic horror scenes about war. With a mix of sad music and graphic material that showed dead bodies, people burning alive and the drop of the atom bomb, Haberkorn’s film showed how technology in war and cause pain.

Her documentary was one of last shown and received much applause. The night however ended on a cheerful tone with people clapping in achievements of their fellow students.
