Fifteen years and five studio albums have made rock icon Nine Inch Nails into a live spectacle.Last Wednesday, Nine Inch Nails gave a flawless performance at the Pepsi Center.Opening bands, Queens of the Stone Age and Autolux led the show with a rocky start.LA-based Autolux opened the show without announcement and with only a fraction of the Pepsi Center filled by fans. Autolox played several songs from their album Future Perfect. Each song had a dark, emo-based riff and an almost unbearable guitar screech thrown in for effect.Queens of the Stone Age elevated the audience’s excitement when they played classics including “Go with the Flow” and “No One Knows.” Half an hour into their set, Queens became extremely redundant and didn’t seem to put any effort into the lighting or effects that powered their show.As a result, nearly every audience member in the reserved sections sat down for the entire Queens performance.Nine Inch Nails made a quick recovery and received a wild standing ovation when the band came on stage.Singer and Nine Inch Nail front man, Trent Reznor, combined with a flexible live band to create Nine Inch Nails in concert. The band showed no signs of stopping once on stage. Nine Inch Nails slammed the audience with a huge dose of songs from one of their first major releases, Pretty Hate Machine. Continuing with a heavy version of “Closer,” the band played songs that both casual and die-hard fans were sure to appreciate. Every part of the performance was amazing. Nine Inch Nails exploited every facet of a live concert: audio effects, visuals and spontaneous shenanigans. Midway through their amazing set, a transparent screen was lowered over the band and songs were played in sync with a very political and somewhat random set of video clips. In addition to the video screen, smoke machines were frequent as was a digitally-enhanced background that displayed some of the artwork from the bands new album, With Teeth. At one point in the show, Reznor played a perfect live version of the band’s famous “Hurt.” It seemed as if every audience member had a lighter or cell phone in hand to wave to the thunderous trance of the song.Closing the show, the band played an extensive set of some of their hits from With Teeth. New and old fans alike cheered as the band played “Only” and “The Hand that Feeds.” Nine Inch Nails ended with the classic “Head like a Hole” and finished an outstanding performance that would have fallen well below average without a memorable finale as the audience stomped and cheered.
