Men’s Soccer The Pioneers left home after losing their previous two games. They would return home after losing two more. The Pioneers lost both their games this weekend, getting shut out by Sacramento State, 3-0 and losing to San Jose State 3-1. The Pioneers entered this weekend with a chance to take their season from a .500 record of 5-5-1 and turn it into a winning season. It was not meant to be. The team found the sunny skies of Southern Calif. unfriendly dropping to 5-7-1 for the season and 1-4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Friday, the Pioneers faced the Sacramento State Hornets in the state’s capital. The Hornets out shot the Pioneers from head to toe, scoring two of their goals off headers in the first half. There was some good news on Sunday as Denver broke their streak of four games with no goals. Liam Girard scored, with only 9 minutes left in the game, off of a penalty kick that got past keeper Brent Douglas. The Pioneers were able to slow San Jose State after the first half, however the damage had already been done. San Jose scored three goals by the time the whistle signaled the end of the first half, although they did go scoreless in the second. The Pioneer offense simply was unable to get the ball past San Jose keeper Richard Mann. San Jose State was called offsides 11 times during the game while Denver was only called offsides twice. San Jose also out shot Denver 17 shots to 13, however, Denver did out shoot San Jose in the second half nine to six. This weekend the Pioneers face the same foes from the west, Sacramento State on Friday and San Jose State on Sunday, giving DU a chance to redeem themselves and hopefully get back to .500 for the season. Women’s SoccerThe DU women lost a heartbreaker in North Texas on Friday, falling to 7-7-2 for the season. North Texas improved to 12-2-2 for the season. North Texas out shot the Pioneers 24 to 9, however, Denver keeper Danielle Wiley held strong for 80 minutes with five saves. A loose ball in the box off a corner kick was knocked past her by North Texas’ Brittany Cleveland with only nine minutes to go in the game. The Pioneers, in a valiant effort to tie the game, shot three of their total nine shots in the final ten minutes of the game. Neither of the benches for Denver or North Texas were offensively active. Denver’s bench had no shots while North Texas’ bench only contributed two of the team’s 24 shots.Since shutting out Arkansas-Little Rock five to nothing last week, the Pioneers have dropped their last two games and have gone scoreless in both. Hopefully they can get back into the rhythm they found against Arkansas-Little Rock and give themselves a winning record heading into the postseason.Denver will close out their season on the road facing Middle Tennessee on Friday and Western Kentucky on Sunday.
