The crowd at the Fillmore Auditorium witnessed an amazing show last week. G. Love and Special Sauce performed two passionate and lively one-hour sets.G. Love and Special Sauce is made up of lead singer, guitarist and harmonica player G. Love (Garrett Dutton), stand-up bass player Jimi Jazz (Jim Prescott) and drummer Houseman (Jeffery Clemens).Virginia Coalition opened the show with a rocking out sound while having fun with their instruments. One of the drummers kept on throwing drum sticks behind him and miraculously having a new one in his hand right after. After an hour of music from the opening band and a 30 minute intermission, G. Love and Special Sauce took the stage. The band offered an interesting mix of both new and old songs. Those who didn’t know any of his new songs might have felt a little lost in the first set. However, most of the songs were upbeat and easy for any fan-old or new-to enjoy and dance to. The second song, “Booty Call” is a couple years old and really got the crowd into the energy that the band was serving up. Then in the middle of the first set, Houseman’s bass drum blew out. The band handled the incident professionally by allowing G. Love an acoustic solo, while the drum was fixed. This set included only a few hits such as “Cold Beverage,” “I-76” and “This Ain’t Livin’,” which had a long instrumental section in the middle of it, where G. Love jammed out on his harmonica. The second set started, as usual, with a few acoustic songs including “Gimme Some Lovin.” G. Love was joined by his band for the rest of the songs and played more hits such as “No Turnin’ Back,” “Dreamin'” and “Baby’s Got Sauce,” which ended the concert. This song also had an instrumental interlude where G. Love danced along with the music of his band mates as they performed solos.All the new songs were upbeat and fun to dance to, but it was somewhat hard to connect to them when I had never heard them before. This concert seemed to be a promotion of their new songs with several old hits mixed in.
