Forget comparisons to “The Matrix,” “Equilibrium” has its own story to tell.

This stunning science fiction tale brings a post-World War III humanity that is devoid of any actual expression thanks to Brave New World-esque drugs taht repress all emotional responses.

Christian Bale (“American Psyco”) stars as John Preston, one of the generic super-cops whose task is to eliminate any remaining sentimentality, sensuality or artistic thought. The punishment for any of these forbidden crimes is immediate death.

Taye Diggs also delivers a stunning perfomance as Bale’s more stoic partner.

Writer/Director Kurt Wimmer is able to paint a rather frightening picture of a fascist state which has complete control over its citizens. Astounding martial arts-driven action sequences and thrilling visuals abound against the artsy urban cityscape backdrop.

Bale’s stunning performance as the man trained to enforce the laws who suddenly becomes the only one who can overthrow it is moving enough to check out this film. – Jeska Dzwigalski
