Six gymnasts named WAC All-Academic
Six Pioneer gymnasts earned Western Athletic Conference All-Academic honors after their first season in the WAC.
Senior Louise Mercer, junior Simona Castro and sophomores Moriah Martin, Kaitlin Moorhead, Melodie Pulgarin Linero and Paige Tollefson each were honored. The WAC honors individuals who have completed one or more academic years, hold a minimum of a 3.00 grade point average and have competed in at least half of the contests.
The WAC honored 31 gymnasts and 263 winter athletes.
“I’m proud of these student athletes and their commitment to both a high level of athletics and a high level of academics,” said head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart. “One of our goals each season is to be among the nation’s elite both in the gym and in the classroom. These awards represent a step in the right direction.”
Five tennis players named All-SBC
Five Denver tennis players were honored by the Sun Belt Conference Wednesday.
Senior Yannick Weihs and junior Enej Bonin were named to the All-SBC men’s tennis singles Team, while the junior duo Bonin and Jens Vorkefeld were named to the All-SBC men’s doubles team.
Junior Sophia Bergner was named to the All-SBC Women’s Singles Team and she and partner Steffi Rath were named to the All-SBC women’s doubles team.
This marks Bonin’s third straight All-SBC singles honor after posting an 11-6 record as Denver’s No. 1 singles player. This is also Weihs’ second All-SBC singles honor after a 12-6 record at No. 2-3 singles.
This marks Bergner’s first All-SBC honor with a team-best 13-8 record at No. 1 singles, and she and Rath held a 10-8 doubles record to clinch DU’s first All-SBC doubles honor since 2008.
Drew Shore claims three post-season honors
At the 56th Annual Hockey Awards Evening on Friday, the team said goodbye to several players and honored several more, including former junior co-captain Drew Shore, who earned three honors.
Shore was named the Most Valuable Player, the Best Offensive Player and the Three Stars of the Game Point Leader.
Denver said farewell to seniors Nate Dewhurst, Dustin Jackson, John Lee, John Ryder, Luke Salazar and student assistant coach David Carle, as well as Shore and sophomores Jason Zucker and Beau Bennett, who signed contracts with the Florida Panthers, the Minnesota Wild and the Pittsburgh Penguins, respectively.
The seniors became only the second senior class in school history to play in four NCAA tournaments and finished their careers with 100 wins, two Denver Cup Classic titles and one WCHA regular-season title.
Also recognized were the 18 All-WCHA Academic honorees and the four WCHA Scholar-Athlete winners.
At the end of the evening, head coach George Gwozdecky named Phillips the team captain for the 2012-2013 season. Nick Shore, Knowlton and Ostrow will serve as the alternate captains.
