March 8 marked International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to recognizing women and their achievements. This year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” encourages a mindset of generosity and support for advancing women and girls worldwide.
International Women’s Day originated in the early 1900s, as radical movements started to grow internationally at the turn of the century. The first National Women’s Day was observed in the United States in accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. In 1911, the day of observance went international, being celebrated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.
Throughout the 20th century, International Women’s Day celebrations have expanded, culminating in official recognition by the United Nations in 1975. The day coincides with Women’s History Month, observed each March in the United States, which celebrates the numerous contributions of women in American history.
Both International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month celebrations highlight the often overlooked historical and contemporary contributions of women to social and political movements.
This year, the University of Denver’s Feminist Student Alliance (FSA) addressed a range of global feminist issues during a panel event on Monday, March 9, featuring university staff and students. The panel, consisting of three professors and one student, was be moderated by FSA’s president, Macey Krull.
Panelists were chosen for their diverse knowledge and perspectives on feminism at the campus, national and international levels.
The panel of speakers included Dr. Indhira Udofia, the director of the Colorado Women’s College Leadership Program; Dr. Kaitlyn Sims, a professor of Public Policy at the Josef Korbel School; Dr. Banan Ramarushton, a professor of psychology; and Alex Rushinsky, a student employee with Thrive Health Promotion.
After insights from the panelists, attendees were invited to share with their tablemates how to create a more feminist-friendly community here at DU.
The FSA executive board wanted to provide an opportunity for DU’s community to expand their minds beyond limited definitions of feminism and incorporate these ideas into their everyday lives.
Throughout the month of March, be sure to follow FSA on Instagram to learn about upcoming events and posts celebrating the accomplishments of women.
