On Sept. 24, DU’s Programming Board (DUPB) hosted their first event of the year, Last Summer Sounds, to bid farewell to summer as autumn quickly approaches.

Beginning at 6 p.m., the campus green was adorned with a stage, palm trees and a table full of Insomnia Cookies and mocktails.

Attendees were mostly freshmen looking to relax and meet new people. They brought an infectious energy to the karaoke stage.

DUPB tried to bring an on-campus band to perform, but unfortunately could not book anyone due to scheduling issues.

Instead, participants took to the stage and sang an abundance of karaoke songs.

First-year Karen Martinez enjoyed the night, despite the fallthrough with the DU bands.

“It’s very relaxed and they had good cookies and drinks. Plus it’s fun to try and guess the song before the chorus.” she said.

The planning for this event began mid-summer, with mainstage committee chairs Ynosh Ilagan and Spencer Kaye taking the lead.

This year DUPB is divided into three committees: main stage, traditions and classics. Each committee is responsible for planning different events.

The main stage committee is responsible for performances. Ilagan is responsible for planning and organizing events including music, hypnotists, winter quarter’s Battle of the Bands (BOB) and spring quarter’s Musicfest — where the winner of BOB gets to open for the guest performer.

As the first event of the year, the co-chairs were content with the student turn-out and are hoping for more as the quarter continues.

In the past, DUPB has managed to draw a larger crowd by hosting more student-led bands and events.

Following Last Summer Sounds, DUPB has planned an event for every week moving forward.

This week’s event is Munch Week to help students reset as they take on midterms and week four of fall quarter.

In conjunction with Munch Week, DUPB is also hosting the fan-favorite Hockey Night Lights, which will begin on Oct. 3.
