In case you couldn’t tell, given the countless Instagram stories, last Tuesday, April 25, was Earth Day — an annual event that garners support for environmental protection. To celebrate this holiday, many clubs on campus united to put on Earth Week.

Each day was filled with many events. On Monday morning, the DU Sustainability Council & Transportation Solutions hosted a Bike to Campus Day, where students were treated to free food and entered in a raffle because they pledged to ride their bike to school.

Monday night, the Sustainability Council hosted a movie screening and conversation. During this event, participants talked about curated clips that portrayed sustainability while enjoying refreshments and appetizers.

On Tuesday, the Sustainability Council hosted a Prairie Park Cleanup. During this event, DU community members and neighbors around Prairie Park came together to help clean the park.

As the day ended, the Sustain-a-thon took over. During this five-hour event, eleven clubs dispersed on the Campus Green to talk about the holiday. Each club had its own table and activity.

Plant Futures was one of the clubs part of the Sustain-a-thon. They had a trifold full of information and gave away a handmade t-shirt. They also had a trivia game; if participants answered a question correctly regarding sustainability, they won a pack of microgreens which are easy to plant and eat.

The Native Student Alliance (NSA) was also a part of the Sustain-a-thon. Participants also had the opportunity to win prizes, including stickers and t-shirts, if they answered a question correctly. The Queer Student Alliance (QSA) also gave students the opportunity to win a book.

Wednesday brought the Earth Week Pop-Up, hosted by the Center for Regenerative Future, and the Sustainability Council’s Earth Week Community Celebration. During the pop-up, the club offered information about the circular economy and sold spring clothing. During the community celebration, participants explored local Colorado businesses and internal DU partners who are passionate about sustainability.

On Thursday, Divest DU hosted Climate Fresk. This informative workshop allowed participants to learn about climate change through a card game.

To wrap up the school week, a Clothing and Gear Swap was hosted by the Office of International Education, where students could donate gently used items. All clothes that were not taken by the end of the week were donated to a local charity.

Just because the school week was over did not mean that the Earth Week celebrations were. Sunday marked the end of Earth Week with the Sustainability Council’s Earth Day Concert featuring GAEYA

Guest vocalist GAEYA, combined her natural ancient worlds and ambient synth sound with an ensemble of Lamont students, guest youth vocalists and the Foothills Community Choir to perform a concert to close out Earth Week.

DU’s Earth Week was filled with countless fun activities and many informational events. It was a fantastic week that truly encompassed what Earth Day is all about.
