On Jan. 30, DU’s Letters of Love chapter held a card-making event at Bean’s Cafe.

Letters of Love (LOL) is a national 501(c)3 nonprofit started in 2018 by Gracie Berbig who lost her mom to leukemia when she was 11. Berbig said that her mom taught her the “…power of letters.” Berbig and her sisters would fill the walls of their mom’s hospital room with cards and were always eager to present new ones to her.

During her junior year of high school, years after her mom’s passing, Berbig wanted to find a way to support others without any financial strains and began Letters of Love at Orono High School in Orono, Minnesota. Since then, they’ve started 284 active chapters across the nation, donated to more than 60 hospitals and have received cards from 18 different countries.

DU’s Letters of Love President Olivia Tate, who hails from Orono, brought a chapter to DU where they continue the tradition of making handwritten cards for children in hospitals.

Just like last quarter, LOL was hosted by Bean’s Cafe. LOL was interested in Bean’s ‘After Dark’ and wanted to host their meeting in a different space and atmosphere. What made this event special was the specialty drink made by LOL — a raspberry lemonade.

“I’d say it’s a pretty good environment that matches our vibe as a club,” said Tate.

For this academic year, the club’s goal is to be the largest Registered Student Organization on campus, collaborate with other groups and of course, make more cards.
