The Denver Men’s soccer team got their fifth win of the season this Sunday at Ciber Field, beating Seattle University 2-1 and continuing their undefeated streak.

The game started with a slow first half. Denver took most of the possession but they were unable to find the back of the net.

Their first big chance was in the 22nd minute from a one-two pass to junior defender Dylan Akau, whose shot was saved by Seattle goalkeeper Charlie Lanphier The rebound was struck by Denver redshirt sophomore forward Bryce Willoughby whose shot was also saved.

The Crimson and Gold broke through early in the second half. Senior midfielder Sam Bassett took a corner kick in the 53rd minute, and while the ball was in the air, three players hit the ground and the ball deflected into the back of the net. The players immediately got into a pushing match over the collisions in the box. After a review, the goal stood and was ruled as an own goal against Seattle.

Seattle responded immediately, winning a penalty in the 54th minute when Denver senior defender Jason Belloli fouled Seattle’s River Stewart in the box and Taketo Onodera buried it in the top right corner to tie the game.

Denver went back on the attack right away, winning a free kick in a dangerous position outside of the box in the 57th minute. Denver graduate student midfielder Lukas Fisher laid it off to Bassett who curved his shot around the wall and into the bottom left corner to score the game-winning goal.

After the game, Bassett “felt pretty good to get on the score sheet and get a winning goal,” but his first priority was “to get another win and stay undefeated.”

Denver’s next game isn’t until Oct. 2 at home against Oral Roberts. This will be their first Summit League matchup of the season. Bassett is looking to work on “creating more chances and diversifying those chances” over this break.
