The Denver women’s lacrosse team finished their homestand this weekend with back-to-back dominant wins. The dominant weekend comes after the program’s first regular season loss in over a year, which took place on the road at Michigan for their second game of the season, losing 8-4.
The homestand began with an afternoon bout against Ohio State on Friday, in which the Crimson and Gold easily won 15-5 in Peter Barton Stadium.
Denver started the scoring early with a senior attack Julia Gilbert goal in the first two minutes of play. The Buckeyes responded almost immediately with a goal of their own to tie the game 1-1 with 13 minutes left in the first quarter. The quarter ended with Denver taking a 4-1 lead.
DU tacked on four more goals in the second quarter, their defense completely shutting Ohio State down, going into half-time up 8-1. Gilbert scored two more goals in the period.
Both teams scored two goals in the third quarter, making the score 10-3 going into the fourth. In the fourth, DU stretched their lead with five more goals, while Ohio State put up two, ending the game with a 15-5 Denver victory.
Gilbert led the DU scorers with four goals in the afternoon. Freshman midfielder Olivia Ripple finished the game with three goals, the first hat-trick of her career. Senior attack Olivia Poyner continued her productive season with two goals and three assists. Denver out-shot the Buckeyes 44-20, with shots on goal ending 31-11 in DU’s favor.
On Sunday, the Crimson and Gold welcomed San Diego State University to Peter Barton Stadium, resulting in a feeding-frenzy as Denver finished with their second double-digit margin win in a row.
Denver started the game fast, jumping out to a 9-1 lead after the first frame. Gilbert scored four times in the first quarter, finishing a second game in a row with four goals. DU put up four more goals in the second quarter, going into half-time up 13-3.
DU never relented their lead for the remainder of the game, scoring three times in the third quarter and twice in the fourth, winning the game 18-8.
In total, nine Denver players scored in the afternoon. Junior attack Lauren Black and senior attack Sloane Kipp both finished with three goals, Black’s second hat-trick on the year and Kipp’s first. Senior defender Bryn McCaughey netted her first goal of the season.
At the end of the week, three Denver players were honored as Big East players of the week. Gilbert was honored as Big East Attacker of the Week, while senior defender Trinity McPherson was honored as Big East Defender of the Week. Ripple was honored as Big East Freshman of the Week, finishing the weekend with five goals.
Denver again finished with 44 shots to SDSU’s 16—DU with 29 shots on goal to SDSU’s 11.
