Glamour, talent and a little bit of tea sparkled on Jan. 7 at the 2024 Golden Globes, the annual celebration of the year’s standout film and television. Let’s dive into the recap.
The event was hosted by comedian Jo Koy, who quickly raised eyebrows as he made some controversial jokes that fell flat, comparing Barbie to Oppenheimer in a “tasteless” manner and then throwing his writers under the bus. Koy has since then defended himself and blamed it on having an “off night.”
“Oppenheimer,” starring Cillian Murphy, took the ceremony’s final honor as the top drama film, capping an evening where “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie, won best original song for Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell’s “What Was I Made For?”
Many reunions on-and-off the red carpet were captured, including longtime friends Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift. But Swift, in a reputation-era green sparkly dress, made an early exit after her nominated Eras Tour film lost to Barbie in a new category for box office performance.
Before she ducked out though, she and Gomez were captured allegedly gossiping about a foiled photo attempt with Timothée Chalamet. According to the lip readers of the internet, Gomez informed Swift that Kylie Jenner shut her down when she wanted a photo with Jenners now boyfriend, Chalamet (a relationship was also hard launched at the Globes). These rumors have been and will likely continue to be debunked, putting said lip readers to shame.
Another emotional reunion was the “Mamma Mia” cast’s Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried, reunited at the pre-ceremony. Streep herself channeled throwback fashion in a sequined skirt along with blazer, channeling her inner Miranda Priestly from “The Devil Wears Prada.”

Supporting drama film winner Robert Downey Jr. gave a witty speech, while TV lead comedy actor champ Kieran Culkin raised eyebrows by exclaiming “Suck it!” at fellow nominee Pedro Pascal, who attended the ceremony in a sling. The injured Pascal brushed off the minor shade from his “Succession” competitor with grace.
Of all the nominees and winners, it was Oprah Winfrey who may have stolen the spotlight in a sensational purple gown, capturing her role in producing and starring in “The Color Purple.” Winfrey dazzled while presenting the night’s final “Oppenheimer” award, eliciting one of the evening’s biggest ovations.

In a history-making win, Lily Gladstone became the first Indigenous performer to be awarded a Globe for best film actress, taking home the honor for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The star gave an emotional speech thanking director Martin Scorsese for “believing in me as we told this important story.”
As the three-hour show wrapped, the stars spilled into the hotel bar and lobby for one last toast over cocktails and canapes. It was a quintessential Hollywood ending to a landmark night for both the Globes and talents finally getting their due.
In a year already marked by skepticism given recent Globes controversies, the ceremony sparked thoughtful conversation while awarding a deserving group of talented storytellers.
