Hannah Kahan, Sophia Belem, Rosie’s Haven and Knvdyce Rose took the stage at “Babe Night ” located at Your Mom’s House last Wednesday, Oct. 18. Yes, that is the actual name of the venue. Your Mom’s House is a small venue near Denver’s Pearl Street. They are known for hosting a variety of different types of music, but specifically club and techno beats. For an $8 cover fee, this night of music was totally worth it.
Let’s talk about the venue first. When you arrive, you’re immediately immersed in purple, yellow and blue stage lights, illuminating the performer and the surrounding art for sale on all of the walls. The dance floor is illuminated by a gigantic disco ball and there is a perfect photo-op in front of the gigantic “Your Mom’s House” background.
The first show consisted of DU students Hannah Kahan and Sophia Belem on the DJ tracks. Kahan was the venue promotion and event planning brains behind Babe Night. “It was amazing giving Rosie a platform, I f**ing loved it,” said Kahan.
When they realized they needed a last minute fill in, they stepped in. “Sophia is actually my roommate and she has a board and some basic DJ knowledge so we partnered up to pull it off,” said Kahan. It was the perfect start to the night of babes and exactly the energy everyone needed to get the night headed in the right direction.
Rosie Ayala, DU’s very own rock star, had a 60 minute set, with a DJ on before and after. As the time got closer for Ayala to perform, DU students filled the venue to no surprise, as she had been advertising this show for weeks now. “The whole ticket selling process was a headache and a half but the numbers kept adding each day I sold,” exclaimed Ayala. She was very happy with the turnout and was excited to see her best friends in the front row, singing every word.
Ayala’s best friend and roommate Audrey Lincoln was extremely proud of how far she has come, from writing and practicing songs in their freshman year dorm room to making big strides in her music career. “I watched the entire process, so seeing her performing in front of all these people, I could not be more proud of her,” said Lincoln.
Ayala went on at 9:15, starting off with some slower songs. Due to her extensive set time, she was able to perform every single song she had ever produced. Getting to hear ALL of her songs from when she was a soundcloud rapper (sophomore year of highschool) to now, demonstrated the evolution of her artistry. From her slower songs like “Enemies to lovers” to her more upbeat tracks such as “intoxicated,” she was able to express her emotion with her vocal range and body movements. “The most emotion came from ‘Dwell’s Love’ and the ‘into’ to my escapism album,” said Ayala. “They just hold a lot of emotion and you can really get into the act of the performance.” The audience did just that.
Ayala’s show had a personal and intimate touch to it, being that everyone there was from DU and the vibe of the crowd was so supportive and kind. “It was quite possibly the cutest thing I have ever witnessed,” said Ayala in response to the crowd’s energy.
As Rosie’s Haven continues to build traction around DU and beyond, Lincoln says it best: “I can see her blowing up. She has the look, she has the voice, she’s gonna go so far.”
After Ayala left the stage and the DU crowd had cleared out, Boulder DJ Kvndyce Rose took the stage with a mysterious and sexy aura. Her songs were upbeat, impossible not to dance to. It was refreshing to see a woman spinning the tracks and only appropriate for Babe Night. Among a variety of tracks, she played her new release “Nedarlands Train Set!” which can be found on soundcloud.
It was indeed “a night for the girls” and one that won’t be forgotten. DU has cultivated such a unique community of artists and fans who are there every step of the way to support women in the music industry. Based on the energy of the crowd, everyone was in solidarity with the words of Ayala.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better night,” Ayala said.
