The No. 9 DU women’s lacrosse team took on the Georgetown Hoyas Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C for a Big East conference matchup. Denver held off a late rally from the Hoyas to come home with a 14-12 victory and improve to 13-1 on the season, remaining undefeated in conference play.
In the first quarter, junior attacker Julia Gilbert (McLean, Va.) opened the scoring in what would be her first of five goals of the afternoon, tying with graduate student attacker Bea Behrins (Basking Ridge, N.J.) the most of any player of the game. Behrins and Gilbert would each score to close a quiet, highly defensive first 15 minutes of the game.
The scoring picked up in the second quarter, with freshman midfielder Lauren Black (New Westminster, B.C.) finding the net followed by fellow freshman midfielder Caroline Colimore (Hunt Valley, Md.) to give Denver a commanding 5-0 lead halfway through the quarter. The Hoyas responded with two goals of their own before Behrins scored two back-to-back goals to draw the half to an end with the Crimson and Gold up 7-2.
The Hoyas got into an offensive rhythm by the third quarter, and the two teams exchanged goals three times, as Behrins, Gilbert and redshirt freshman Raegan Wilson (Milton, Ontario) each responded to a Georgetown goal. The Hoyas would get the final word of the quarter as they scored two consecutive goals in the final 1:44 to make it 10-7 Denver.
The offensive battle would reach its peak in the final 15 minutes, with a total of nine goals between the two teams. Behrins added a tally to kick things off, with three Georgetown goals to follow. Georgetown made it a one-goal game on three separate occasions but never got the one-up as Gilbert scored twice and Black added a tally with seven-and-a-half minutes remaining. Gilbert’s goal with 95 seconds left ended up as the game-winner, as DU demonstrated heavy defense for most of the final minutes of the game.
DU outshot Georgetown 33-23 in the win, which spoiled the Hoya’s quest to remain unbeaten in conference play.
Denver will look to keep their win streak alive as they face Villanova on April 23 before coming home to close out the regular season against Colorado and Marquette.
