The University of Denver Undergraduate Student Government (USG) diversity committee released a statement following multiple incidents of discrimination at the involvement fair on Friday, Sept. 10.

While the statement does not give specific details regarding what exactly occurred, it does make it clear that several student organizations were involved.

“The incidents occurred between members of many different affinity organizations and other student organizations,” it states. “It involved microaggressions, threats and other discriminatory actions.”

Furthermore, the statement criticizes poor organization at the fair, noting that members of the diversity committee “felt the involvement fair was executed poorly and created a harmful space for members of our community.”

“Moving forward, we hope that DU will address the system of oppression and privilege that exists in order to move forward towards a more culturally and socially aware community,” the statement reads.

The statement continues by calling for the University of Denver to address and investigate the incidents and the system that allows these types of actions to take place.

The USG diversity committee declined to give further information to the Clarion to “ensure the privacy and safety of the impacted students.”

The office of Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence also released a statement via emails to DU students, though it provides little additional information about the incident. It does, however, imply that an investigation is active.

“While we seek to learn more about the incident,” the email notes, “anyone who witnessed any inappropriate or concerning behaviors yesterday (or at any time) should report them to the university through the submission form for bias incidents, harassment, or discrimination.”

The email further clarifies the University’s goals when it comes to inclusivity, stating, “at DU, we continually strive to be a diverse, equitable, and intentionally inclusive community that allows each and every member to thrive as their full and authentic selves.”

The Clarion will continue to look into these incidents and will provide updates as they become available.
