The Denver women’s tennis team continued its streak of success this season, picking up wins against BYU and Colorado over the weekend at Denver Tennis Park.
On Saturday, DU hosted the Cougars and won six out of seven matches across both singles and doubles. Denver’s lone doubles loss of the day came in the first match, with the duo of junior Taylor Melville (Duluth, Ga.) and senior Hada Chang (Trophy Club, Texas) falling to BYU’s Anastasia Abramyan and Helen Jiao, 6-2.
The rest of the day’s doubles matches went in favor of DU, with sophomore Britt Pursell (Oceanside, Calif) and partner senior Camille Verden-Anderson (Epsom, England) picking up a 7-6 win after an intense match. The duo of junior Toni Nelson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and senior Anna Riedmiller (Wichita, Kansas) also won their match 6-2.
In singles, Denver fared equally as well, winning five out of six singles courts. Riedmiler, Pursell, Verden-Anderson and Nelson won their matches in straight sets, and Verden-Anderson only dropped a single game. Melville won in a tiebreaker at #1.
On Sunday, the Colorado Buffaloes came to town and gave DU a run for their money.
Denver swept the doubles with the most noteworthy match being a 6-1 victory from Chang and Reidmiller. The Melville/Nelson duo and Pursell/Verden-Anderson also saw wins in doubles, the latter of which marking the players’ fifth consecutive victory as a pair.
DU saw some struggles in the singles matches, going 3-3 for the day. Sweeps from Pursell and Reidmiller, along with Melville’s saved match points in a second set tiebreaker, helped push Denver to a win. The team has improved to a 5-3 record.
Next, the women will host Utah and Colorado State on Feb. 27 and 28 respectively at Denver Tennis Park.
