The Graduate Student Government (GSG) executive board met on Feb. 8 to discuss and vote on changes to several e-board positions. These changes include the altering of roles and responsibilities and the creation of four new positions.
The votes on four new roles; Director of Finance, Director of Student Orgs, Director of Professional Development and Director of Social Media, all passed with unanimous support. Changes made to the position descriptions and responsibilities for the President, Vice-President, Director of Communications, Director of Community Engagement and Director of Inclusive Excellence also passed by majority vote.
The executive board’s vote does not finalize the process of change and creation of new roles. These modifications require amendments to the GSG constitution and can only occur by a majority vote of the GSG Senate.
The first new position to be voted on: the Director of Finance. It is being established to foster communication and collaboration regarding budgeting and finances between the executive board and the GSG Senate. The Director of Student Orgs is centered around working with and putting on events with student affinity groups across campus to better build a sense of community.
The Director of Professional Development aims to host events that provide professional experience and networking for graduate students. The last new position, the Director of Social Media, is focused on utilizing social media as a way for GSG to build their brand, reach a wider audience and communicate more effectively.
The Executive Board also spent time discussing and finalizing their plans for April’s Graduate Student Appreciation Week. The full schedule of events is set to be announced during week seven of this quarter.
The meeting ended with preliminary discussions about how and when the e-board, and potentially even the GSG Senate, will be able to return to in-person meetings. With COVID-19 cases low on campus (less than 40 in the last seven days) and DU’s recent change to Code Blue, GSG members are keen to go back to face-to-face gatherings.
