This year, Bayern Munich ranked number one in the world for their 2019-2020 season, winning 24 out of the 34 games played and running rampant in the Champions League the best teams in the world compete in. They also completed what is called “the treble” in European football, meaning they won the domestic league title, the domestic tournament and the Champions League.
It comes as no surprise to anyone that Bayern Munich is an excellent team. With a 6-foot-4 goalie—considered by some to be the team’s best goalie since the 1970’s—and a striker who once scored five goals in nine minutes, it is no wonder that the team has ranked first in the Bundesliga league for six years running.
While the team has dominated the league for over half a decade, it was surprising to watch them suffer a 5-1 defeat to Frankfurt, another professional German FC. After this loss, World Cup winner Hansi Flick was appointed as the new coach of Bayern Munich.
The world watched again as Munich’s scores skyrocketed. For nineteen consecutive games or more than half the season, the team emerged unbeaten.
But it wasn’t just their coach who led them to victory. Several exceptional players impressed the world with their skills and ferocity on the field. Alphonso Davies, the 19-year-old Canadian winger, was recorded as the fastest Bundesliga player ever at 36.51 kmh or 22.69 mph. Another extraordinary player, Robert Lewandowsky—the Polish striker who has earned worldwide recognition and respect—scored 34 goals in the Bundesliga during this season and has now been awarded the Top Scorer award five times. Lewandowsky is the third top scorer in history in the Bundesliga.
Bayern Munich’s new prowess was seen in their match with Barcelona. This club has Lionel Messi, arguably one of the best soccer players, and is always in contention for being one of the best teams in the world. Munich decimated the Spanish team 8-2 in a historic beatdown. The defeat was so bad that the Barcelona coach, Quique Setién, was fired afterward.
Munich also beat one of the best teams in England, Chelsea, 4-1 in the game immediately before their match with Barcelona.
The team has continued into this season with a strong start, winning a game 8-0 against Schalke, another German team. Serge Gnabry, a German winger for Bayern Munich, scored a goal within the first four minutes of the game. Jamal Musiala, a 17-year-old midfielder, scored the eighth goal during the closing minutes of the game. This was Musiala’s first game in the Bundesliga. The team also won a close game 2-1 against Sevilla on Sept. 24.
Bayern Munich’s history has proven them to be a record-breaking team and fierce force to be reckoned with on the field. Germany and the world will watch with anticipation to see if they can keep their winning streak this season.
