Last week, the Clarion published its own list of student-athlete awards to recognize some of this year’s top talent in DU athletics. Starting Monday, May 11, the DU Division of Athletics and Recreation began handing out its own version of the MVP awards to the most outstanding players across all 19 varsity sports on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. These awards would have traditionally been presented at an all-sport banquet on May 11, but they were canceled due to COVID-19.

Each day, DU has been revealing the winners from three different sports. The list will conclude on May 19. Some highlights of the awards at the time of writing include women’s gymnastics senior Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) who became the DU co-record holder for highest all-around score this year, men’s basketball senior Ade Murkey (Minneapolis, Minn.) who started in all 31 games this season and averaged 18.6 points per game and hockey junior Ian Mitchell (Calahoo, Alberta) who recently signed an entry-level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Other notable award winners are women’s tennis sophomore Taylor Melville (Duluth, Ga.), who was ranked 103rd in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I singles rankings, and senior men’s alpine skier Tobias Kugler (Salzburg, Austria) who won the giant slalom event at the NCAA skiing championships this year.

On Wed. May 20, the special awards will be announced, which include female athlete of the year, male athlete of the year and comeback player of the year. The awards will be announced at 10 a.m., 1 p.m and 4 p.m MDT respectively.
