On the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 2, Magnus Arena was filled with more than 4,100 fans cheering on the No. 4 Denver women’s gymnastics team. In front of this electric crowd, the gymnasts steadily worked their way through all four events to finish with a season-high final 197.425. The Pioneers beat both Ball State University and the Air Force Academy who scored a 194.875 and a 193.825, respectively. Denver swept the podiums and impressively ended the meet with a first-place finish in every event. Senior Maddie Karr took home the first place all-around title with a 39.600 and was followed by Denver junior Lynnzee Brown who recorded a 39.500. Karr also boasted two other first-place finishes with an impressive 9.900 on the vault and a 9.975 on the bars.

Denver started the meet with a strong performance on the vault and earned a 49.225, their second-best vault score of the season. As previously mentioned, Karr placed first in this event, scoring a 9.900. Juniors Mia Sundstrom and Lynnzee Brown were part of a three-way tie for second with Ball State’s Stefanie Schwelkert, as all three gymnasts scored a 9.850. Denver sophomore Alexandria Ruiz also held a podium finish and was part of a four-way tie for third with a 9.825. 

On the bars, Denver had yet another strong showing with six of their competitors placing in the top seven overall. With a 49.475, the Pioneers tied the third-best bar score in program history. Karr was once again first with her near-perfect score and was followed by junior Emily Glynn with a second-place score of 9.900. Freshman AK Subject scored a 9.875, a career-high, to tie with Sundstrom for third.

Denver continued their impressive night as they moved to the beam, scoring a team total of 49.300. Sophomore Alexis Vasquez took first overall with a 9.950 while Sundstrom took second with a 9.900 and Brown third with a 9.875. 

Once on the floor, the Pioneers continued their dominance and scored a season-high 49.425 in this event. Brown recorded a 9.950 to place first overall and Karr placed second with a 9.925, her best score on the floor this season. All five of Denver’s counted scores were above a 9.800 as Lockhart recorded a 9.875, Glynn a 9.850 and Subject a 9.825. The team’s final score was almost three tenths higher than last season’s record.

The Pioneers look to continue their impressive season as they travel to take on No. 2 Florida and No. 16 Iowa State on Friday, Feb. 7.
