The DU women’s tennis team came out victorious in both of their opening matches against the Air Force Academy and Gonzaga University to kick off their spring 2020 season. The Pioneers swept Air Force 7-0 on Friday and beat Gonzaga 6-1 on Sunday at Denver Tennis Park.

On Friday, five singles match victories from sophomore Tatum Burger (Denver), junior Hada Chang (Trophy Club, Texas), freshman Britt Pursell (Oceanside, Calif.), junior Anna Riedmiller (Withita, Kan.) and junior Camille Verden-Anderson (Epsom, England) helped propel the Pioneers towards the sweep.

In doubles, the duo of Burger and sophomore Toni Nelson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) won their match 6-1 as did the pairing of Chang and sophomore Taylor Medville (Duluth, Ga.).

On Sunday, Chang and Medville showed their stride in doubles yet again to start the morning, winning 6-1, while Burger and Nelson won 6-4. The Pioneers lone defeat in doubles came from Reidmiller and Verden-Anderson, who lost 6-3.

In singles, the Pioneers went 5-1 including a perfect match from Chang, defeating the Bulldog’s Vlada Medvedcova. The only Pioneer to not win their singles match was Nelson, who fought hard but came up shy in both sets, 7-5 and 6-4.

Denver will travel to Palo Alto, Calif. this weekend for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off Weekend, where their bracket will feature Stanford, Washington State, and South Florida.
