Last weekend, the DU taekwondo team competed at the Midwestern Collegiate and brought home more than just bruises. The club sport saw an increase in members this year from every level in its ranks. The team began preparation at the beginning of the year and has made great progress with the inclusion of new coach Sean Jung.
On Friday, Nov. 1, the team departed for Manhattan, Kan. with University of Colorado Boulder and University of Northern Colorado. There were no formal weigh-ins, so each team settled in and began some light practice for the following day. After carb-loading to replenish glycogen stores, the competitors got some hard-earned rest and prepared for the tournament.
The tension and excitement in the air were palpable as each team arrived at the Kansas State campus. Competitors spent equal time gauging their competitors and warming up as the equipment was set and final preparations put into place. Poomsae took place first, a traditional approach to taekwondo that consists of the performance of designated forms in a dance-like sequence. DU competitors did well in Poomsae and managed to place in some of the top ranks.
Next came sparring. Competitors were divided into A, B or C class depending on experience and belt level. The A class allowed head kicks and knockouts (temporary loss of consciousness) and had some of the most exciting matches with each competitor at the top of their game. The B class allowed light head kicks with C class prohibiting all kicks above the chest. DU fights managed to secure first place in both B and C class in male and female divisions.
Other competitors supported their teammates and excellent sportsmanship was demonstrated throughout. DU took home fourth place overall out of eight schools and third place in sparring.
The team showed incredible progress with new members competing with less than two months of practice. Club taekwondo is in the process of working on their strengths and weaknesses and getting ready for nationals in March.
