Groups are finished and quarterfinals have been drawn. Week two of group stage saw many teams make a miracle run into the knockout stage.
Day 1:
The first day of week two saw Splyce start with a 1-2 scoreline. In order to make it out of groups they had to go 3-0, and maybe play a tiebreaker. So what did the young European lineup do? They ran the gauntlet starting with a pre 30 minute victory against J Team, followed up by a tough win against FunPlus Phoenix. This win guaranteed them at least a tiebreaker against either J Team or FPX to fight for first or second seed. Although, Splyce were able to complete the 3-0 day they were not able to beat a very angry FPX in the tiebreaker for first seed. That being said, Splyce achieving second seed is a great accomplishment for such a young squad.
Day 2:
After week one of groups most people expected the group to finish like it started, with G2 on top and Griffin following them. Expectations be damned because week two saw tournament favorites G2 Esports play some very League of Legends. However, the only team capable of truly punishing them was a superpowered Griffin who had a 4-0 day ending with taking down G2 in a tiebreaker for first seed.
Day 3:
“EU week two”: a saying used to describe the power-up that European teams seem to have between the two weeks. It might just be a meme, but it was there for Fnatic. The squad was in the “Group of Death” with tournament favorites SK Telekom T1 and a Royal Never Give Up led by Uzi, who was in monstrous form. Fnatic, who started with a 1-2 scoreline, had such a high mountain to climb, and yet they ascended. After having a shaky start against a 0-3 Clutch Gaming, the European giants started playing like themselves. They started playing with confidence and aggression. We finally saw the team that gets leads through aggressive playmaking and early game skirmishing. That was the team that demolished an SKT who was poised to 6-0 the group. That was the Rekkles who finally stepped up against Uzi. Fnatic ended the day as second seed behind SK Telekom T1 after having a 3-0 day.
Day 4:
The final day of week two saw young, Korean upstarts Damwon Gaming clinch the first seed against 2018 World Champions, Invictus Gaming. IG was able to secure second seed after defeating Team Liquid in a match for second.
Quarterfinals: Top eight is set to begin Saturday, Oct. 26, at 4:00 a.m. MST, with Griffin versus Invictus Gaming.
