League of Legends:
Groups have been drawn and combatants are set to begin their journey at this year’s League of Legends World Championship. Clutch Gaming versus Unicorns of Love kicks off the tournament Wednesday, Oct 2, at 5:00 a.m., MST.
Play-ins:
Play-ins this year feature a number of interesting teams, but also some that, frankly, have no chance at qualifying for the mainstage. The general consensus of the community is that Clutch Gaming, Spycle, Lowkey Esports, and Damwon Gaming will all qualify for the main event. On the other hand, teams like Flamengo eSports and DetonatioN FocusMe are predicted to do almost nothing in their groups.
Main stage:
Another year, another world championship, and another ‘Group of Death.’ We live in a society where SK Telecom T1, Fnatic, or Royal Never Give Up are not going to make it out of groups. These are three of the biggest organizations in League of Legends history. So is the plight of this tournament. You fight so hard to get there, only to be knocked out in the first step. However, if you make it past that first step, you could create a legacy. Which one of these challengers will rise to the top of the peak? Eyes are immediately drawn to Group C, but Group B and D could both become a lot more interesting if Damwon Gaming were to be placed into either of those groups. Damwon Gaming is the caliber of competitor that can shake up the dynamic of either group. With Damwon Gaming in Group D, 2018 world champions, Invictus Gaming, could be knocked out of groups. On the other hand, with Damwon in Group B, favorites, FunPlus Phoenix, might only get second seed, which could give them an unfavorable quarterfinal against a first seed.
Overwatch:
The Overwatch League finals took place this past weekend and were, honestly, quite disappointing to watch. San Francisco Shock completely rolled over the Vancouver Titans. This was prophesied to be a war between gods, but instead we were gifted a 4-0. At least Sinatra’s promise to destroy Vancouver came true.
Super Smash Brothers:
Mainstage took place this past weekend, which means we were treated to some great Melee and Ultimate. In the latter, we had Nairo tear through top 16 on the winners side of the bracket, ending the tournament by defeating number one ranked player, MKLeo. The former saw Hungrybox go through everyone who dared to stand in his way in his usual, methodical style.
