The DU’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the most prestigious honorary academic society in the U.S., elected to membership 55 seniors and 24 juniors at a recent meeting. The new members were chosen on the basis of high academic achievement and the breadth and challenge of their course programs in the liberal arts and sciences.
The new members will be initiated in ceremonies in the Hamilton Recital Hall of the Newman Center, at 6:00 pm on Thursday, June 13, before the chapter’s annual banquet; chapter president Prof. Dennis Barrett, Biological Sciences, will preside. Phi Beta Kappa traces a continuous line of scholar members since its founding in 1776, as the first academic honorary society in the New World. It is the forerunner of all the contemporary honorary societies and collegiate social fraternities and sororities. The “Greek System” is Greek because of Phi Beta Kappa.
