On Apr. 25, 2019, Joe Biden announced that he will be running in the 2020 Presidential Race along with 21 other Democrats and two Republicans.
As a former vice president and the longest standing senator in Delaware, Biden has a significant amount of political experience. He is also more moderate and older than many of his Democratic competitors. According to a recent CNN article, Biden has averaged 28% in the national polls in the past month and 30% over the past year. Historically, candidates who average 30% in the first half of the year before the primary win their primaries roughly 40% of the time.
Biden was born and raised in Scranton, Penn. where he spent 10 years of his childhood before moving with his family to Delaware.
Biden’s interest in politics started at the University of Delaware where he studied history and political science.
During his time at the University of Delaware, Biden met his wife Neilia Hunter, a student at Syracuse University. After graduation, Biden decided to attend law school at Syracuse University although he wasn’t passionate about law.
Biden joined the U.S. Senate in 1972, becoming the fifth-youngest senator in U.S. history and longest-serving senator in Delaware. He served as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee before leaving to become vice president in the Obama campaign in 2009.
Under the Obama Campaign, Biden helped pass legislation such as the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010, the Budget Control Act of 2011 and the American Taxpayer Relief Act. Additionally, he collaborated with Obama to create the U.S. policy towards Iraq and other policies to counteract the Great Recession.
Biden will continue campaigning until the Democratic National Convention on July 13-16, 2020 in Milwaukee, Wisc.
