The No. 13 Pioneers were able to push past St. John’s 15-12 behind the effort of junior attackman Ethan Walker (Peterborough, Ontario), who scored his third career sock trick. Freshman faceoff specialist Brett Boos (Parker, Colo.) continued to shine as he went 22-of-31 from the dot assisting the Pioneers in game control.
Making his first collegiate debut after relieving senior Alex Ready (Lancaster, Pa.) in the second quarter, freshman goalie Cole French (Danville, Calif.) stepped up and made nine saves out 15 shots faced.
In the first quarter, St. John’s started well early as they took a 2-0 lead before the Pioneers were able to respond with three straight goals. In his first career start, freshman Austin Stewart’s (Arlington, Va.) tallied his first career goal in between goals by Walker. The Pioneers and St. John’s traded goals between the first and second quarter until the Pioneers ended on a 4-1 run taking a 10-7 lead into the half.
St. John’s was able to come within two in the third quarter but the Pioneers were able to keep their 12-10 lead going into the fourth. The fourth quarter began with a goal from Walker but St. John’s scored to keep the game within two. Eventually, the Pioneers finished their scoring 15-11 with goals from freshman Alex Simmons (Smithville, Ontario) and Walker.
The Pioneers will return home to face Providence on Apr. 20 at 12 p.m. MST for the final home game of their 2019 season.
