The Pioneers improve their record to 11-8 (4-2 Summit) with an 81-54 win over the North Dakota State Bison. The win came behind the impressive performance of junior Madison Nelson (Dover, Minn.) as she went for 27 points and 11 rebounds, one point shy of her career-high. Senior Samantha Romanowski (Mountlake Terrace, Wash.) had an all-around performance for the Pioneers as she had 17 points, five steals, three assists and two rebounds. each other the past four years.
The game began slowly as both the Pioneers and Bison made 6 of 24 shots in the opening minutes of the first quarter. The Pioneer held an 11-4 lead but the Bison were able to push back with a three-pointer and free throw to end the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Pioneers begin strong as they reached a lead of 15 at one point in the second. The Bison fought back but only reaching a scoring difference of nine. At the end of the first half, the Pioneers would hold an 11-point advantage.
The Pioneers continued to extend their lead at the beginning of the third quarter to 19 points as they went on an 11-3 run. The Pioneers would expand their lead after a Bison timeout with the lead turning into a 26 point difference. The offense would slow as the third quarter came to a close with the Pioneers up 63-36. As the fourth quarter began, the Bison continued to fight and push the Pioneers, despite being down by 27 points. The difference would get to 21 points in the fourth but the Pioneers continued to control the game until the end.
The Pioneers are now 5-2 in their past seven games as they look to continue their offensive prowess as they face strong Summit League competition in the coming weeks.
