On the road in South Dakota this weekend, Denver Women’s Soccer lost to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 0-1, marking its first loss in the Summit League this season.
Both teams struggled to find a lead in regulation time, combining for only 5 total shots in the first half and a slightly better 9 in the second. The stark scoreboard would take Denver into OT for the second game in a row.
Most of OT looked remarkably similar to the first 90 minutes: Denver only got 2 shots off from freshmen Samantha Feller (Grand Junction Colo.) and Camryn MacMillan (Littleton, Colo.), with only 22 seconds left, South Dakota’s Leah Manuleleua found the back of the net to finish the game 0-1.
“Overall, I’m happy with how we played, keeping another top team in the league scoreless on the road for 90 minutes after the way we won on Thursday,” said head coach Jeff Hooker. “We had a couple of good chances to win in overtime, but we switched off with 30 seconds left and allowed them to create a chance late. It’s a really disappointing way to end the road trip, and now instead of continuing to stay on top of the league, we are chasing now.”
This loss leaves the Pioneers at 3-1 in Summit League play this season.
Their next game will be against Purdue Fort Wayne at Fort Wayne Thursday at 5 p.m. MST.
